Yesterday in a conversation I was reminded about the BE – DO – HAVE concept, and how so many seem to get this concept mixed up.
First let’s explore what BE – DO – HAVE means.
Put as simply as possible, this concept is all about BEING the person you want to be and DOING the right things in order to HAVE the life and experiences you want.
I have found that is very different to what many people actually do.
Like many concepts in our world, we talk about being, doing and having in that order, yet what I often see is people focusing on having, doing and then being.
Many focus on what they want to HAVE in life, having goals and having a plan in order to get them to a destination and some measure of their success.
They then use the plan to write down what they need to DO in order to HAVE what they want without first understanding that they need to BE in the right mindset in order to DO the right things, so that they can HAVE the life and experiences and world that they want.
For example, this is how many who ask for my help start out….
“If only I could HAVE (more time, more customers, more profit), I could DO what I want to do, and then I could BE happy….”. This is exactly the conversation I had with someone yesterday.
The biggest problem? If’s and could’s are speculative and may never come, Yet you can choose who you want to BE today!
If you are going to see success, whatever success might mean for you, first, decide who you are going to BE, what you stand for and what you believe in.
Then everything you DO will be aligned to who you are, which means that everything you HAVE now and will HAVE in the future is based on you BEING the best version of yourself.
Take a moment to think about that and ask yourself next time you are thinking about setting quantity based goals and plans to HAVE what you want and putting in place the plans to DO the activities necessary to HAVE what you want, first think about who you want to BE because BEING the person you want to be means that you can DO the things necessary to HAVE the things you want. Not the other way around.
