We all live our lives at 100 miles an hour, so how can we keep our battery charged with such a demand on our energy?
Our day begins, I hope, with a fully charged battery and, in the same way as a mobile phone uses its battery to run, so do we. As I am working through my day with clients, phone calls, conversations, meetings etc, each part of every conversation uses part of my internal battery charge.
So what happens if our battery is not fully charged each day? You know the answer, our battery will not last as long. Exactly the same as for our mobile phones. The amount of time and energy we have to invest in the activities in our day is decreased. This is why it is so important to look after ourselves. Rather than plug ourselves in, take a little time for yourself, to recharge your batteries. Make sure you eat well and make sure that your health and wellness are catered for. Get enough sleep so your battery can be fully recharged everyday.
As a business owner, I personally am very mindful that my energy levels can decrease over the day and I am often at my best in the mornings when my battery is fully charged. One of the most important lessons I have learned is to always keep a little bit in reserve so when you are running on low energy, there is still enough power to deliver a great service.
Top tip: never plan your days or weeks in such a way that your battery runs out. An empty battery always takes longer to recharge than one that still has some energy remaining. We work in exactly the same way. If we are so busy every day that our battery runs on empty at the end of the day, we will always need to spend more and more time recharging.
We are hybrids – Here is one way I keep my battery charged.
In the same way as hybrid batteries in cars, I have learned that I can be of best service to the people I work with by keeping my battery charged. On a daily basis, I make sure that some of the conversations and engagements I have use my energy and some of them recharge my energy. This way, I am never on empty at the end of the day.
A very simple tip to look after ourselves, our health, our wellness and our ability to service our clients in the best way we can – think about yourself as having your own internal hybrid battery, like a car. What does it take to keep your battery charged and recharged throughout our day rather than engaging in activities that constantly drain us.
What if our days ended with a full charge rather than what many of us do – end the day tired, exhausted and drained and looking forward to the weekends.
To go a little deeper, I believe there are three elements of our personal energy that we need to keep topped-up.
Firstly, our physical energy which we keep recharged with exercise, diet and sleep.
Secondly, our emotional energy which we keep recharged with social interactions, spending time with family, friends and people generally. This I think we all agree has been a focus for many of us over the periods of global isolation we have all experienced.
Thirdly, our intellectual energy which we keep recharged with personal development, learning outside of work learning, spending time with your coach or mentor and participating in mastermind groups which both challenge and inspire you.
Look after all three parts of your battery, keep them charged and keep topping them up during the day and week with activities and conversations that inspire, challenge and excite you.
