I’ve spent many years helping businesses identify their Target Market and when asking, I’ve found that most answer by saying “well, I can do business with anyone…” and whilst it may be true that we can do business in any industry, particularly if we have a service based business, I believe it’s not true that we want and should do business with anyone.
After all, I’m sure we’ve all spent time with clients who we subsequently wish we had not engaged. After spending many years myself in that exact position, ie, thinking about which industries I want to work with, I had a revelation!
What if we did business with the right people first and think about industries afterwards? With this approach we immediately remove drama, reduce time and money objections and have “great clients”.
Would you rather work with great clients or every client? I decided to work with great clients and I’m sure you would too if you’re not already. When doing business by relationship and with the right people, you CAN still do business in any industry, you will just be doing business with the right people, those that share your values and beliefs. I believe that the most successful businesses recognise that better business makes more profit than just more business.
What should I do first? For us to attract nice clients, we need to know what nice looks like for us. Here’s three things you should have in place in your business:
1. Know and understand why you do what you do
2. Define and share your values
3. A credible Vision and Mission
If these foundations are not yet clear in your business, ask me for help.
Happy to talk it through with you.
